When I was 12 years old I had an opportunity to spend my summer at the Historic Sherbrooke Village in Nova Scotia. My days were spent in historic dress learning about the trades of the past. My most favorite of all was spinning and weaving. I was so amazed at the beautiful pieces of art that came off the spinning wheels and looms. At that time the natural fiber that was available was from a variety of breeds of sheep. I resolved then and there that I would someday learn to spin and weave.
Fast forward to the mid 80's when alpacas were introduced to North America. I was very interested in these amazingly beautiful animals with gorgeous fiber and followed any literature I could find on them over the years. My second resolution was to someday own a herd of alpacas.
Fast forward to the year 2015 when I started taking weaving and spinning classes and was able to purchase a much loved floor loom from a weaver who had retired. Resolution #1 underway and the planning for resolution #2 was in the works. In 2020 I was blessed with the opportunity to purchase and bring home a wonderful little herd of 5 Huacaya alpacas. Two pregnant females, two yearling males and one older female who will live out her retirement years here with lots of love and food.
My first cria was born on May 10th, 2020 - Mother's Day! What a wonderful day that was!
My herd continues to expand and I am busy spinning, weaving, knitting, crocheting and felting with their amazing fiber. I've sent some fiber to shows for judging and am so pleased to have received several ribbons. I am enjoying these magnificent animals and their fiber more than words can express.
So my friends - never give up on your dreams - they may just come true!
